CULTURAL CONDITIONING

So far we have reviewed what ethnic and race-based stress and trauma is, and how it differs from PTSD. We have reviewed how the nervous system works automatically to identify safety and danger and how our nervous system responds to these cues, and we have reviewed how stress and trauma land in our bodies. In this chapter we will review how our cultural conditioning shapes our perceptions of what is safe and what is dangerous, what is race-based and what is not. We have cultural identities and individual identities, and we have group identities too. Whether or not we admit it, each of us is part of a racial and ethnic group identity. There are many categories of identity and in this chapter we will explore how cultural conditioning, dominant racial group identities, and subordinated racial group identities influence and shape consciousness, and how our conditioning can cloud our perceptions. And we will discuss how yoga can help lift the veil, enhance clarity, and support harmony.

The way we gather and process information is culturally determined. Western cultures tend to rely on data-driven, evidence-based, objective information that is devoid of emotional content. In the West this is called objectivity and is regarded as the most valid way to present and process information. But is it really?
